The Wyandotte Nation operates its own Tribal Police Department. The police department is unique in that it provides a non-tribal community with their sole source of police services. Officers are both tribal and municipal police officers, and employees of both the Wyandotte Nation and for the Town of Wyandotte.
The WNTPD oversees the security and well-being of all Wyandotte tribal properties and the residents there in. Wyandotte Nation maintains agreements with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Fairland Police Department, Oklahoma Highway and the Eastern Shawnee Tribal Police should an emergency arise that requires law enforcement at a designated area at any given time.
These meetings, hosted by the Wyandotte Nation/ Tribal Police Department, are open to citizens from the town of Wyandotte, tribal citizens, town and tribal leaders, and school administration. We invite the community to sit in on these meetings to help address any community problems, concerns or comments in a forum type setting.
Adam Walsh Act- Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA): We maintain an approved Sex Offender Registration Program through the Wyandotte Nation, and have an officer who serves as the SORNA Officer. SORNA provides a comprehensive set of minimum standards for sex offender registration and notification in the United States and aims to close potential gaps and loopholes.
Our D.A.R.E. officer serves not only the Wyandotte schools, but the Miami, Afton and Fairland School districts, presenting the D.A.R.E. curriculum to nearly 600 students.
We host a Community Block Party during “National Night Out” annually. It’s an opportunity for the community to come together and visit with neighbors and local law enforcement to form stronger partnerships. The event features fun activities, food, refreshments, and prizes.
Local families experiencing economic hardships can’t always provide their children with their own celebration of Christmas. That is where our annual ‘Shop With a Cop’ program comes in, joining underprivileged children with our police officers and other area tribal officers, providing the children with money to shop for Christmas presents for their families and themselves.
