The Wyandotte Nation Emergency Management Department reminds all residents, employees, and community members to take precautions during periods of winter weather, including snow, ice, and extreme cold. Your safety is our top priority.
Before the Storm:
- Stay Informed: Sign up for weather alerts from reliable sources such as the National Weather Service (NWS) and local notifications from Wyandotte Nation Emergency Management.
- Prepare Your Home: Insulate pipes, check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and stock up on food, water, and essential supplies.
- Vehicle Readiness: Keep your gas tank at least half full, check tires, antifreeze, and windshield wipers.
- Emergency Kit: Have blankets, flashlights, first aid supplies, extra batteries, and non-perishable food ready.
During the Storm:
- Stay Indoors: Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
- Dress Warmly: Wear layers, including hats, gloves, and waterproof boots.
- Avoid Overexertion: Shoveling snow can strain your heart—take frequent breaks.
- Monitor Updates: Follow official Wyandotte Nation alerts via radio, text, and social media.
After the Storm:
- Watch for Ice: Walk and drive carefully; black ice can form quickly.
- Check Neighbors: Ensure elders and vulnerable residents have heat and supplies.
- Report Hazards: Downed power lines, blocked roads, or damaged structures should be reported immediately to the appropriate departments.
